US Judge Blocks Elon Musk's Access to Sensitive Treasury Records

By Smah Ibrahim

A US federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction blocking Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing sensitive Treasury Department records containing personal data, including Social Security numbers and bank accounts of millions of Americans.

This decision follows a lawsuit filed by 19 US states against the administration of former President Donald Trump, alleging that granting DOGE access to these records would violate federal law.

Regarding the ruling, Judge Paul A. Engelmayer stated that anyone who obtained this data since January 20, 2025, must destroy any copies of the records immediately.

This move comes at a critical time, as Elon Musk's appointment to head DOGE has sparked widespread controversy, particularly after the reappointment of Marco Eli, who had previously resigned due to racist remarks, sparking further criticism.

DOGE is an initiative aimed at reducing government costs and has been granted access to Treasury Department payment systems, raising concerns about protecting Americans' personal data.

Ongoing legal discussions on this matter are expected, with a hearing scheduled for February 14, 2025, to discuss further details related to accessing these sensitive records.
