تُعد المروحية Mi-24V العاملة لدى القوات الجوية المصرية أشهر مروحيات الإقتحام والدعم النيراني Assault / Gunship في العالم، وتم تطويرها في الأساس من مروحية النقل العسكري Mi-8، وأطلق الطيارون السوفييت عليها لقب " الدبابة الطائرة Flying Tank "، نظراً لحجمها وثقل وزنها وقدرتها على تقديم كافة أعمال الدعم والإسناد النيراني وإصطياد الدبابات، إلى جانب قدرة نقل وإنزال 8 أفراد بكامل تجهيزاتهم القتالية، أو 4 محفّات لنقل المصابين او 2400 كج من المعدات على الخُطّافات الخارجية، ولا يقابلها في العالم إلا نسخة العمليات الخاصة المُسلحة من مروحيات بلاك هوك الأمريكية MH-60L Direct Action Penetrator.
ولذلك تُعرف الـMi-24 وتُصنّف عالمياً بشكل حصري كمروحية إقتحام Assault Helicopter وليس كمروحية هجومية Attack Helicopter، نظراً للمزج فيها بين القدرة النيرانية وقدرة حمل الأفراد، بعكس المروحيات الهجومية الرئيسية كالأباتشي والمي 28 والكا 52 التي تم التركيز فيها بشكل كامل على قدرات الهجوم والقتال مع الوزن الأخف الذي يسمح بالمناورة العالية، وبعكس المروحيات الناقلة كالمي 8 والمي 17 التي تمتلك قدرة نيرانية اقل وأوزان اكبر لا تسمح لها بالمناورة والقتال على الخطوط الأمامية.

It is lighter, which allows high maneuverability, unlike the Mi-8 and Mi-17 carrier helicopters, which have less firepower and greater weights, which do not allow them to maneuver and fight on the front lines.
